Modano broken on Excel 2010 by Windows Update (KB3178690)

The latest Windows update appears to have broken Modano on my computer (Windows 10 + Excel 2010).

Has anyone else experienced this issue and found a workaround?

Hi Jeffrey,

Microsoft released a bugged security update to Excel 2010 last week which breaks Modano (e.g. you can’t even insert or delete categories, etc.), so you will need to remove this security update from your computer. We have contacted Microsoft and requested that they address this issue ASAP. This is the name of the update:

Security Update for Microsoft Excel 2010 (KB3178690) 32-Bit Edition

You can check it out here if you’re interested: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=54893

Here’s how to remove it:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Installed Updates.
  3. Sort the list of updates by Name.
  4. Click on the update ‘Security Update for Microsoft Excel 2010 (KB3178690) 32-Bit Edition’.
  5. Click the Uninstall button.
  6. Follow the steps to uninstall the update.

Here's an image from my machine below.

Let me know if you have any issues.

Cheers, M.

So it turns out Microsoft is aware of this issue and is 'working urgently on a fix':

It's also recognised by Microsoft as a known issue here:

Importantly, Microsoft have stopped pushing this update as an auto-update, so once you've uninstalled it you should be OK thereafter, even if you leave auto-updates switched on.

Great to know, thanks Martin.
