Unable to expand and collapse grouped rows and columns

I have shared my model with a bank not using Modano and they are unable to expand and collapse grouped rows and columns within worksheets.

Is there some way around this with the bank needing to install the Modano Excel add-in or me having to unmanage the workbook? I'd rather leave it managed if possible.

Thanks, J.

Hi Jeffrey,

Since version 10.20.1.0 of Modano, anyone using the (Windows or Mac) desktop version of Microsoft Excel should be able to collapse and expand grouped rows and columns without installing the Modano Excel add-in.

The most common cause of this issue is a Microsoft Excel nuance when sheets are protected which stops the sheet level  outline symbols from being used, displaying the following dialog:

However, the collapse () and expand () symbols in the row and column headers will still function normally, as shown below:

So here's what we recommend in your situation:

  1. Update your Modano Excel add-in installation to the latest version, then open, edit and save your model again.
  2. Email the above image to your model user without Modano installed and check that they're not trying to use the sheet-level outline symbols instead of those above the column headers and to the left of the row headers.

Many people don't realise that Modano can be used for free in Reader Mode after trials expire, and Reader Mode allows all outlining tools to be used, as well as a bunch of other tools like posting issues to the workbook issues register, WIP yellow formatting, etc. The image below shows the Modano Excel add-in in Reader Mode with a modular workbook loaded:

The Modano Excel add-in does not require administrator rights to install, so you can always try asking 3rd parties to install a free trial, even just to access Reader Mode: www.modano.com/get_started

I hope this helps.

Hi Tarjei,

Reader Mode does not allow users to use the Traverse Formula tool, as this is a model development / audit tool, not something that assists in model use.

We gave away the Traverse Formula tool for 15 years, so we're comfortable charging people for it these days!

Hi Guys,

This issue (bug) has now been fixed by Microsoft, so you can use all the outlining tools on modular workbooks without Modano installed.

This is a great win. M.
